19 Apr Don’t Over-Empower Your Inexperienced Employees
As managers, we love those fresh-out-of-college, high-energy, “I-know-everything” employees. They often are a breath of fresh air, bringing great enthusiasm and amazing energy into a company.
But they also bring vast inexperience that must be managed carefully. Seasoned managers must carefully shape and guide these youngsters, helping them grow into well-rounded, high-contributing employees.
The temptation to pile on project after project to these workers is great, because they are often so willing to take on more, more, more, and in their over-confidence, they assure their managers that it’s ok to pile on more, that they can handle it.
What happens? Work is shoddily done. Work is incomplete. Inadequate research leads to inadequate results. These over-confident newbies assure the team that they know how to perform. But in reality, they have so little experience and have taken on way too many projects in order to please the boss. The company pays for the mistakes.
Your job as a manager is to pay very close attention to the actual performance of these inexperienced employees. Make sure you understand exactly what they do, so you can check that they’re performing to standards. If you have no idea what they’re doing, because you don’t understand the job, yet you just assume they’re doing everything they tell you they are, you fail the employee and you fail your company.
