Lamar Smith Discovers Devil is in the Details

Dj Schulte image

DJ Schulte image that was illegally used by Rep. Lamar Smith.

In a story apparently broken by Vice, there’s a lot of buzz this week about Congressman Lamar Smith having broken the very law he proposes.

Smith is chief architect of SOPA (the “Stop Online Piracy Act”),  a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives presented as an effort to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites.

On Smith’s campaign website,  he used a lovely landscape image, by photographer DJ Schulte. The image is apparently a create commons image, which requires that the creator be credited.  However, on Smith’s website, the image is not credited to Schulte.  Copyright violation.

Lamar Smith is breaking the very law he proposes.

An oversight, you might say.  I say: critical detail that must be addressed.  It’s a reminder of the importance of crossing Ts—it’s absolutely critical that details be addressed, always. One little slipup can completely destroy your credibility.
